Concept Cars Competition

Running 30.11.23 - 16.02.23 (Live Launch 30.12.23 @ 11:30 - 12:15)

Fusion Educators hub have been commissioned by the Baker Dearing Trust and Autodesk to write this years Fusion 360 design Competition.

The project is inspired by the BAC Mono - a production car built in Liverpool - which has much in common with concept cars on account of its innovative approach to design and engineering

The competition is open to any student who is attending any one of the UTC Schools and colleges for the academic year 2023 - 2024.

The BAC Story

BAC (Briggs Automotive Company), are the manufacturers of Mono, the World’s first single seater production car. Mono borrows much of its architecture from Formula cars, with advanced materials such as carbon fibre and titanium making it incredibly lightweight. The car is clothed in a sci-fi inspired organic body, contrasting with the exposed mechanical elements.

Mono is intended as the ultimate piece of sports equipment for the enjoyment of driving. As travelling by car becomes increasingly sanitised and autonomous, Mono stands out as vehicle that provides a truly exhilarating and immersive experience.

BAC are passionate about design, and inspiring the next generation of designers. Murray Adams one of the senior designers at BAC wants to challenge the new generation of designer to design their very own Concept Car.

Concept cars

Engineers have been dreaming up different concepts for cars and vehicles for many years. A concept car is a prototype vehicle created by automotive manufacturers to showcase innovative design ideas, advanced technology, and potential future directions for their brand.

Concept cars often push the boundaries of automotive design, featuring cutting-edge aesthetics, innovative engineering, and experimental features that may include alternative powertrains, autonomous driving systems, unique interior layouts, and advanced connectivity options. While they may not be destined for commercial sale, concept cars play a vital role in shaping the automotive industry by influencing design trends, inspiring technological advancements, and providing a glimpse into the possibilities of the future of transportation.

The competition & Prizes

The rules are simple, use Fusion 360 or another Autodesk platform to generate your "Concept Car". The entry can be any form of vehicle including a truck, bus or car. The origin for each vehicle should be a "form" that is sculpted, manipulated and detailed into the bodywork. The other parts of the vehicle should be modelled and added around the form.

There will be gift vouchers for each of the top 3 students in each category.

The "Top 10" will be invited for an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the BAC manufacturing facility.*

A number of the winning entrants will be invited to exhibit their designs at mach 2024.*

The winning UTC for best overall engagement will have the opportunity to choose 6 of their designs to be embedded into their very own Augmented reality merge cube.

The overall winner will have a full colour 3D printed model of their concept car presented to them in the form of a trophy.

*please note there may be some geographical restrictions to access to these events. We will work with all entering centres to help support access. There will be some transport available, but overnight accommodation is not available. Please get in touch for any queries

Getting started:

The next thing you need to do is make sure you are working on a computer with Fusion 360 installed. If you want to install it at home, you can do this completely free of charge by following the links below. If you can't install it why not just use the browser version by clicking below.

You will need an educational verified account for this, so ask your college or one of your teachers if you're unsure how to do this!

Videos and tutorials

To help you along the way the team at Fusion Educators hub have created 3 of their own concept cars. You might want to follow through the steps changing your designs as you go, or make one with Dan or Andy and then use your knowledge to make your own.
